A LEGACY IN FAITH,
VISION, ACTION
My earnest prayer will always be that those who worship here will revere the memory of the lady whose great
devotion made this Church possible for us and for our prosperity.   She died in her youth but lived long enough to
leave behind her an everlasting monument of her faith and devotion to the Catholic Church."

1892   Founded by Marie Le Breton de Laveaga, Santa Maria Chapel  (Miner Road) was
dedicated on September 11, 1892 by the Most Rev. Patrick William Riordan, Second
Archbishop of San Franciso.
1947  The Archdiocese of San Francisco canonically established Santa Maria Church as a
" parish"  of the Archdiocese.

1954   On December 24, 1954, at the Christmas Eve Midnight Mass,  the first Liturgy in the
"New " church was celebrated at its present location on Santa Maria Way.
1960   The school building and convent were added.  In 1974, the school closed because of
a small enrollment.  The facility was leased to the St. Joseph School for the Deaf.  When they
left in 1984, the building was transformed into a parish center.
1963   On January 13, 1962, Blessed (Pope) John  XXIII established the Diocese of Oakland,
separating Alameda and Contra Costa Counties from the Archdiocese.
2000+   Within the Diocese of Oakland, Santa Maria Church is a vibrant Catholic community
with over 1250 registered families. Extensive renewal of its buildings and grounds has
occurred. A vigorous Parish Pastoral Plan has been adopted and is being implemented. The
parish is experiencing a renaissance in younger families, as well as in children and youth
participation. The parish empowers its lay ministers and validates the equal importance of
lay and religious ministerial roles. The Parish tackles social justice issues through
education and effective outreach services, has a vibrant liturgy, and fosters a sense of
community to all who enter.  Santa Maria Parish affirms its mission and involves its
parishioners in
witnessing and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ,  in inviting and
welcoming all into fellowship,  in serving everyone, especially the most vulnerable,  through
their personal and  communal resources.  The leadership of the parish is committed to
equip Christ's disciples for their ministry in the church and for their life mission in the
world, thereby, enabling them to worship God as a Eucharistic community through faithful
and fruitful lives.
Evangelization is the primary driving purpose of Santa Maria Church
