In 1892, Santa Maria Chapel was built on Miner Road through
the kindness of Marie Le Breton de Laveaga. It was dedicated
on September 12, 1892 by the Most Rev. Patrick William
Riordan, Second Archbishop of San Francisco.
In 1947, the parish was canonically desinated as a Parish of
the Archdiocese.
In 1954, Christnas Eve, the first Liturgy was celebrated at the
present sight on Santa Maria Way. The facilities were
composed of the church building, parish hall, and rectory.
In 1960, the school building and convent were added. The
school was closed in 1974 and in 1984 was designated a parish
center.
In 1963, on January 13, 1962, Blessed (Pope) John XXIII
established the Diocese of Oakland, separating Alameda and
Contra Costa Counties from the Archdiocese.
Today, Santa Maria Church is a vibrant Catholic community
with over 1200 registered families. Extensive renewal of its
buildings and grounds has occurred. The parish is
experiencing a renaissance in younger families, as well as in
children and youth participation. The Parishaddresses social
justice issues through education and effective outreach
services, has a vibrant liturgy, and fosters a sense of
community to all who enter.
Santa Maria Parish enables its parishioners to welcome and
invite all into fellowship; to serve especially the most
vulnerable, through their personal and communal resources.
The leadership of the parish is committed to equip Christ's
disciples for their ministry in the church and for their life
mission in the world through faithful and fruitful lives.
